South East Denver 2-Alarm fire visible for miles 03/01/17

03/01/17 Denver, CO – A fire on this date sent dozens scrambling to safety and sent smoke and flames billowing into the afternoon sky.  The fire which broke out around 4PM today called for a large response by the Denver Fire Department.  The fire occurred at the Artisan Apartments located at 10025 E. Girard Ave. near the JFK Golf course in South East Denver.  First arriving fire units observed heavy fire and smoke from an apartment building and immediately called in a 2nd alarm.  Numerous firefighters pulled fire hoses from hydrants and snaked water-charged lines in-between the crowded dwellings.  When this reporter arrived on the scene the main body of the fire had been knocked down but firefighters were still scurrying around with hoses and fire gear in hand in an effort the keep the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings.  Also, several families appeared to be leaving the fire area with pets in hand.  Thick smoke hung in the air with early March sunlight scattering through it in rays.  No civilians were reported injured in the incident.  There was one report of a firefighter receiving minor injuries while battling the blaze.  Denver Fire Department investigators were on the scene (as is routine in a fire of this size) in an effort to determine what may have caused the fire in the first place.  Shane Anthony reporting
